RESEARCH NEEDS FOR SUSTAINABLE COCOA PRODUCTION IN GHANA
Forest Restoration
Ghana has a high rate of deforestation and it would be beneficial to restore the degraded lands, both for biodiversity conservation and potentially for the communities. Modified Taungya Systems (MTS) are used in several occasions to allow the fringe communities to benefit from the restoration, but this system also has several challenges (see ‘CREMA & MTS’).
Research needs:
-
How will forest restoration affect biodiversity levels and on which time scale?
-
How can the communities participate in and benefit from forest restoration?
-
To what extent can the MTS be used?
-
How can shaded cocoa cultivation (or other forms of agroforestry) contribute to forest restoration?
