Farmers' Needs

Research needs:

  1. What are farmers’ needs? How can the project address them?

  2. What are community needs? How can the project address them?

  3. How can farmers and communities be empowered to identify and address their own needs?

  4. What are the institutional arrangements to support cocoa farmers, where do they go when they come across problems?

For any project on cocoa sustainability, it is imperative that the cocoa farmers are willing to participate in the project and this will be more likely if the project addresses their needs. Only then can the project aim to have an impact on biodiversity and natural resource management. Therefore, it is important to identify the needs in the communities by means of a needs assessment and to identify challenges on the farms, in the communities and in the forest (Anon., personal communication). Moreover, it is important to identify the institutional arrangements that support cocoa farmers and how this can be made more effective so it is clear for farmers who they can turn to for advice on the challenges they face (Anon., personal communication).
