Challenges

When all the sustainability dimensions are combined in one landscape, it can be challenging to achieve effective project implementation.  Primarily, farmers will need to be motivated to participate and understand how to project addresses their needs. The removal of shade trees is a major challenge to sustainable production, which is largely due to the land tenure and tree tenure arrangements. Moreover, the interaction between biodiversity and cocoa production is not very well studied which is important to assess the impact of the project on the cocoa farms. The conservation of biodiversity in a production landscape can also lead to increased human-wildlife conflict. Finally, the competing claim from mining as land use could have a big impact on cocoa production and nature conservation in Ghana.
